Roof Pitch API

An API that turns a New Zealand address into a measured roof pitch and the true roof surface area, read from LINZ aerial LiDAR. Built for roofers, solar installers and insurers who price work by the roof.

Completed November 2026

Key features

Roof pitch from LiDARTrue surface areaCanterbury coveredOpenAPI specRate limits per keyBuilt on LINZ open data

Roofers, painters, solar installers and insurers all start with the same question: how big is this roof, and how steep? Today that means a site visit, or a guess from a satellite photo that cannot see pitch.

Roof Pitch API is our own product. Send a New Zealand street address and get back the building footprint, the roof pitch in degrees and the true roof surface area in square metres, in about a second.

What we built

  • Measured, not estimated: The pitch is read from LINZ aerial LiDAR over the building outline. The surface area is the footprint divided by the cosine of the pitch, so every number traces back to open government data.
  • Every roof measured in advance: All 433,572 buildings across nine Canterbury districts are measured ahead of time, so a request is two database reads.
  • A confidence rating on every pitch: Each result says how sure the measurement is, so you know when to ask the customer to check it.
  • Documentation a developer or an AI assistant can read: Every endpoint with an example response, rate limits per key, and every error code with whether it is safe to retry. The same content is published as an OpenAPI 3.1 spec and an llms.txt.
  • Who it is for

Anyone who prices work by the roof: painters, roofers, solar and insulation installers, insurers and property platforms. It grew out of the measurement engine behind the Lemira roof quote widget, which measures a customer's roof before anyone climbs a ladder.

    Coverage and access

Canterbury is live. Other regions follow wherever LINZ has flown LiDAR. Access is by arrangement rather than self-serve, so get in touch for a quote.

    Built with

TypeScript, Cloudflare Workers and D1, LINZ LiDAR and building outlines, OpenAPI and Next.js.
